Margate, NJ is just a few minutes south of the famous Atlantic City, NJ. Margate is also the original site of Atlantic City, until a hurricane demolished the attraction and it relocated.
In 1881, a real estate developer named John Lafferty built a 65 foot tall elephant shaped building to attract people to some crappy bits of dune that he owned. The elephant was christened "Lucy" and in 1976 (after undergoing some extreme restoration and even a move) was recognized "as a National Historic Landmark, taking her place alongside of Independence Hall, the Alamo and other famous sites that possess national significance in commemorating the history of the United States of America."

Throughout the years Lucy had been a tavern, a summer residence, a speakeasy & always an attraction.
