July 21, 2008 - Lily's Monroe County Fair Project!

The other night Lily wanted to make a pillow for Thayne for his birthday, so I taught her how...then she wanted to make a blanket...and a bed...then it sort of snow-balled from there...

We found wood in the garage the perfect size for making a doll bed, so we didn't have to cut anything. Lily used the drill and drilled holes (I even showed her how to counter sink, because I could only find the 1 inch screws!) then applied glue and screwed the parts together. The only thing I did was help hold the heavy battery end of the drill.

Then she painted it hot pink with purple polka dots and hearts. Then she hammered in little furniture feet.

Then with my only addition of guiding the fabric...Lily sewed together a mattress cover, top sheet, pillow & matching doll dress! She operated the presser foot lever, snipped the threads, ran the pedal and pushed in the reverse button when needed.

I helped with design...when Lily described to me how she wanted things, I showed her or told her how to get there...but all the work was completely Lily.

The next day we realized was the day to enter things into the Children's Division of the Monroe County Fair. So Lily decided to enter her bed and doll, whom she christened "Zamba".

Lily & Zamba

Zamba in all her glory!

For judging, the Fair ladies separated the wooden bed from the doll and her sewn items,
so that Lily had 2 entries rather than one, since her project was multimedia.

The painted wooden bed won First Place in its class!

The doll's dress and bed clothes won First Place, an Honor Ribbon & Champion in it's class!
